Joel Schick credits Roosevelt for giving him a second chance even though his grades were subpar. While an undergraduate, Schick began working at a print shop, which sparked his interest in publishing.
Schick graduated and moved to New York, where he worked on books by authors like Kurt Vonnegut and Barry Lopez. In the 1980s, Schick joined the Muppets illustrators. He spent 15 years creating images of the iconic Kermit, Miss Piggy, Elmo and others.
In 2015, Schick donated The Joel Schick Collection, which includes papers, books and original artwork, to the Roosevelt archives.
